Food intolerance or food allergy?

According to Allergy UK up to 45% of the UK population is affected by food intolerance, therefore more people need to be aware of the differences between food intolerance and food allergy in order to take the correct course of action. All three require different tests to identify them and different management. Food sensitivity can also arise from mechanisms that don’t even involve the body’s immune system such as enzyme deficiencies (as in lactose intolerance) and chemical sensitivities (as in reactions to food additives).

Symptoms of food intolerance

Food intolerance is a condition with a mixture of symptoms and can be difficult to recognise and diagnose. Those affected often suffer for years without knowing the proper steps to take, unable to enjoy normal life and activities and in some cases, unable to work.

According to charity Food Intolerance Awareness, common symptoms that food intolerance can contribute to include:
If you feel you have an intolerance to a certain food, I can arrange a simple test that you can take in the comfort of your own home using a small pin prick blood sample. Your results will include dietary advice on how to avoid any intolerant foods (if any) and alternatives available.

Please note that food intolerances may not always be as straight forward as getting tested, then avoiding the foods indicated. Sometimes they are not the cause of the health problems, but in fact the symptom.

Food intolerances can often develop as a result of underlying digestive disturbances such as the balance of gut bacteria, the robustness of the gut wall, digestive enzyme activity and parasites.

This can all be discussed in depth during a consultation.
